Communities are hungry for books! Help Little Free Library fulfill its mission of book access for everyone by coordinating a local book drive. You can lead a book drive and distributed the collected books to local Little Free Libraries. Little Free Library staff can answer your questions along the way. 

This is a flexible volunteer opportunity. You can coordinate your book drive during the times that work best for you and your community. 

How to get started: Register online to sign up. After you register, we will send you a guide about how to coordinate a book drive. 

Purpose: By keeping Little Free Libraries filled with books, you are helping to build community, inspire readers, and expand book access. 

Responsibilities:

Time Required: A typical book drive lasts about two weeks to one month, plus time beforehand to plan and promote the drive. 

Training & Resources Available: We will help you get to know our organization and share our tips for planning a successful book drive.

We use WordPress to tell the story of our mission and activities on our website. We are looking for someone with deeper skills than ours to help us refresh our pages. 

Participate in a hands-on volunteer session where you'll support individuals as they format, edit, and review their resumes using a template provided by our Job Readiness Training Instructor. Volunteers will offer one-on-one guidance to help participants highlight their skills, experience, and accomplishments in a clear and professional way, ensuring they leave with a polished resume that’s ready for job applications. No professional HR experience required, just a willingness to help others succeed!

In this interactive volunteer session, you'll help individuals prepare for job interviews by conducting mock interviews using a question template and evaluation form provided by our Job Readiness Training Instructor. Volunteers will offer constructive feedback on interview responses, body language, and professionalism to help participants build confidence and improve their interviewing skills. No prior hiring experience is necessary, just a desire to support others on their path to employment!

Target Hunger had to close many of its brick-and-mortar pantries due to COVID-19. We began delivering prepackaged boxes of food to our client's homes, in partnership with Door Dash. This partnership with Door Dash is coming to an end so we are trying to switch our clients over to our mobile pantries. Staff has expressed the need of volunteers specifically on Tuesdays usually from 9am to 11am. Volunteers in the pantry will help pantry staff guide client's shopping, the restocking of the mobile pantry, and assist clients to their cars. Bilingual preferred. Prefer a reoccurring volunteer.

Food Fairs are pop-up food distributions completely open to the public. These fairs prioritize fresh produce, serving an average of 150 to 220 households at each event. Volunteers play a vital role in the success of these events by setting up tents, repackaging bulk produce, and distributing the goods directly to clients. These events are particularly rewarding because volunteers can see the immediate impact of their efforts, making a tangible difference in the lives of those we serve.

The AIP BIPOC Network is seeking volunteers to represent our organization at health fairs, expos, and local events. You’ll help staff our table, share information about our programs, take photos, and engage with community members. Your work will directly support our mission to improve the quality of life of the BIPOC Autoimmune Community through Awareness, Advocacy, Action, Assessment, and Alignment.

Come and volunteer at the Target Hunger Food Pantry on Senior Pantry Day!

Volunteers will assist with checking in clients, clients while they shop, keep the shelves stocked, and properly weigh client's groceries. Our pantry staff needs assistance on the first and third Tuesday from 8 am - 12 pm at the Denver Harbor Multi-Service Center Target Hunger food pantry. A reoccurring volunteer is preferred. Bilingual in Spanish is also preferred, but not necessary.

Bloom leads adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to a lifetime of community-driven health and wellness. We offer in-person classes at partnership locations and virtual classes through our fitness app. Classes include strength, dance, yoga, Pilates, indoor cycle, and chair fitness. Bloom is always looking for volunteers to teach or help facilitate a class.  

Please note that to facilitate a class (in partnership with a live or virtual coach), no fitness instruction experience is needed. Bloom provides the training. The only requirement to enjoy this position are a desire to commit to the athletes over time. 

To teach a yoga or Pilates class, volunteers must be certified. To teach any other class, fitness experience is preferred.

This opportunity is great for groups and individuals.

Volunteers sort, assemble, and distribute grocery items for walk-up or drive thru clients. Volunteers may also help by registering clients using Houston Food Bank qualifications.

This opportunity is available every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and on specific Saturdays, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. (Please see available shifts below.)

When arriving, please park in the parking lot across the street from the Guadalupe Basic Needs Center. Also, dress comfortably. This opportunity takes place outdoors. Close toe shoes are required. For a map, please download this parking guide.

NOTE: We cannot accept court mandated community service hours for any of our volunteer opportunities.

Keegan Kitchen volunteers assist with meal prep and packaging of hot meals for daily distribution to community locations where children gather after school.

The Protein Pack Room is one of only 10 in food banks across the United States. This unique and highly essential volunteer opportunity greatly impacts our ability to distribute nutritious foods to our partners, ensuring our neighbors receive the protein they need.

Volunteers are needed for setup, registration, traffic control, and to load food/relief items into vehicles as they drive through. The volunteers are needed from 7am-12:30pm. Partial shifts are acceptable.

All minors will need a Minor Waiver. Seven years old is the minimum age for distribution days, anyone 7yrs to 13 years of age must have an adult accompany them  Please complete the Minor Volunteer Waiver for anyone under 18.

Bread of Life. Inc. is located on the campus of St. John's UMC Downtown at 2019 Crawford St., Houston, TX 77002. The distribution takes place behind the church, underneath the Pierce Elevated. Parking for volunteers is available in the parking lot across the street from the church on Gray St., all other parking is metered Mon - Sat until 6pm, (with the exception of Jackson St. where street parking is free).

Our building is situated on a park-like campus with easy access and plenty of parking. You'll work with friendly chapter employees who are dedicated to the vision of a world without Alzheimer’s.

We need volunteer support to help us sort and organize our donation closet! Our closet is a vital way for refugee families to select essential items like clothes, hygiene items, and kitchenware. With the number of donations we received, the closet can get disorganized quickly. Because of this, we are looking for volunteers to help sort and organize our donation closet so the families we serve can have a safe and easy time finding the items they need to acclimate in Houston.

This is a flexible opportunity and can be done in our offices during office hours (8:30am-5pm, Monday-Friday)

Three (3) or more traffic violations during the last eighteen (18) months.

Felony or Class A Misdemeanor conviction (includes Felony or Class A Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication convictions).

Class B Misdemeanor in the past ten (10) years (includes Deferred Adjudication convictions).Family Violence offense conviction.

Indictment for any criminal offense (approval or reinstatement is based on disposition of court case).

Not living in the United States legally.

Under 17 years of age (except YPAC students).

Had / have a pattern of abusing prescription drugs.

Dishonorably discharged from the United States Armed Forces.

Current City Employee (unless participating in Citizen Patrol).

Physical / mental disability that would substantially impair an individual’s ability to perform their duties.

Unlawful sexual conduct prior to and/or during volunteer term.

Inappropriate behavior relating to sexual harassment or racial slurs.

Committed an act or behavior tending to bring reproach and/or discredit to themselves and/or the Houston Police Department.

Used, tried, or sold any dangerous drugs or narcotics including cocaine, crack heroin, LSD.

We need your help, delivering a daily hot meal (weekdays) and brief, friendly visit to homebound seniors, throughout Harris County. We have needs in areas, including Midtown/Downtown, the Heights, Energy Corridor, Katy, Barker Cypress, and more. We are also looking for additional Hubs/Sites, so please let us know if your faith community, business, civic group, etc. is open to learning about what it means to be a Meals on Wheels Site. :-) 

Responding to this need will register you, as an individual, for becoming a Meals on Wheels Delivery Volunteer. After completion of your New Volunteer Training, we can share with you where we most need volunteer support and you can choose your delivery area, from those needs. All of the seniors on any MOW route live close to one another and a volunteer route typically delivers to 12-15 homes, between 10:30 AM and 1:30 PM, on your assigned weekday. Delivering should take approximately 60-90 minutes, including loading your car and delivery time. It's a great way to spend your lunch break!

As a Tour Guide, you will share the history of the structures in Sam Houston Park with visitors from around the world by providing tours of the historic structures. This rewarding program allows you to increase your knowledge of local history and develop new connections. Tour Guide training prepares you to discuss Houston and Texas history as well as the decorative arts and lifestyles represented in the structures.

This position is similar to the tour guide position, except that your main focus will be on giving tours to school groups. This position is perfect for people who work with children often, especially in an educational setting. Children’s Educators do not need to know all the houses as there are specific ones included in our curriculum for different age groups. We mostly handle kids from kindergarten to eighth grade. Children’s educators are also asked to help with girl and boy scout badge workshops, which allow for more one on one time with children and more activity oriented learning.  Background check required.

Are you tech-savvy and like to help behind the scenes for live media events? If you are a pro at optimizing the use of your cell phone apps, have social media experience, and know traditional media, then we could use your talents here! Behind-the-scenes duties include setting up the set, running errands, breaking down the set, meeting guests, and assisting a show host before, during, and after a show. All our events are in Downtown Houston, and our museum has free parking.

These volunteers get to work hands-on with real historic artifacts. Their duties include organizing the archives, cataloguing artifacts that are not accessioned, and checking that previous artifact records are correct. This may also entail conducting your own research on specific items if information is missing. Background check required.

Volunteers are needed for a variety of special events, programs, and activities. This includes Scout Badge Workshops, culture and art festivals in Sam Houston Park and on Bagby Street, Juneteenth celebration, and Annual Candlelight Tours. Volunteer calls for special events happen over email about a month prior to the event. Because these opportunities happen less often, special event volunteers are only required to volunteer at four events a year to stay on the active roster.

Groups up to 8 serve to-go breakfast or lunch at our residential facility, RoseMary’s Place. Shifts are available Monday-Friday. Agape Homes CDC creates quality affordable housing for diverse communities without concentrating poverty. The Agape Homes CDC goal is to give the families in the Agape Development community an affordable option to own a home. Sponsoring the landscaping and providing the necessary labor to install the landscape items helps keep the cost of the homes at an affordable level while also creating a welcoming space for our new homeowners.

This sponsorship opportunity covers the expenses of all landscape items: trees, sod, bushes, dirt, and mulch. All supplies will be ordered and onsite for your group to complete installation! This project of landscaping one home is best for 5-7 people but can accommodate up to 10. It is estimated to take approximately 3 hours, depending on the speed of your team.

The cost of this sponsorship is $5,000 per home with no limitation on how many homes you can sponsor as they become available and ready for sponsorship.

We are looking for a volunteer to help us set up digital signage on the tv in our lobby. We would like it to show photos and important announcements using an app to update. Volunteer will provide us with options for apps and help us get it set up.

The Agape Homes Program exists to preserve affordability and create a pathway to homeownership for neighbors in OST/South Union who otherwise could not afford to remain in this gentrifying community. TERJA hosts monthly workshops in the Houston community focused on Menstrual Health for girls and young women. These workshops address crucial topics, including menstrual health equity, period poverty, sustainable solutions, and breaking the silence, shame, and stigma associated with menstruation. Participants watch videos and listen to stories from girls and young women in Kenya who are combating period poverty by creating reusable sanitary pads using local materials. The workshops include discussions on TERJA’s reusable sanitary pads, which are made from organic, biodegradable materials, and explore how sustainable, eco-friendly solutions can help alleviate period poverty. A local tailor will demonstrate how to create reusable pads and underwear using both sewing machines and traditional hand sewing techniques. Following the demonstration, attendees participate in hands-on activities, where they create their own reusable pads, underwear, and bags, with ongoing support provided. We are seeking volunteers to serve as facilitators during these workshops.

Volunteers will be required to attend an orientation and training session before the first workshop. Your involvement will be instrumental in empowering girls and young women through education and practical skills.   

Do you enjoy chess? Are you an avid player, either competitively or recreationally? We have the volunteer opportunity for you! Bayou Village School is a small non-profit elementary school located in the Near Northside community. We have a fledgling chess club, started last year under the supervision of parent volunteers. Chess club participants are in 2nd-6th grade (ages 7 through 11). Typically there are 10-15 students who participate. Two parent volunteers are present for each chess club gathering for behavior management and hands-on support. 

We are seeking a person or people with chess awareness and ability- you do not have to have prior experience as a chess coach (but it would be a plus!) Students in our chess club have a good mastery of the basics and are ready to take their play to the next level. Chess club meeting days can be flexible- we typically meet twice a month from 3:30-5pm. Days can be selected that work with the coach's schedule! 

Your help will make a real difference by turning chaos into order and helping the whole team be more productive. Together, we can create a more organized, efficient space that will benefit all of our events.

Freed Art and Nature Park is one of Houston’s officially designated nature preserves, and the Friends of Woodland Park proudly partners with the Houston Parks and Recreation Department (HPARD) to help protect and restore its natural habitat and biodiversity.

Thanks to grant funding from the State of Texas and the Student Conservation Association, HPARD is undertaking an important restoration effort to remove invasive plants and reintroduce native tree species. We need your help to make it a success.

Gloves, tools, water, and snacks will be provided. Please wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes.

The Friends of Woodland Park (FWP) is seeking a Garden Director as a non-voting member of
FWP with responsibility for the garden areas surrounding the community center, Firefly Field
garden, the entrances to Woodland Park and other possible areas in the future. The Garden
Director will liaise with one or more FWP Board members. Attendance at FWP board meetings
is not required unless requested by the board. A commitment of 12 months is preferred.

Expectations Include:
Maintain all current beds which may include adding more plants as needed.
Oversee design of future beds.
Work with volunteer coordinator to solicit volunteers and organize seasonal workdays for garden maintenance.
Coordinate with Girl Scout and Boy Scout troop leaders if they ask to volunteer for required
required service hours.
Suggest to the board new ways to enhance the attractiveness of the park using plants.
Consider the creation of educational activities for children focused on gardening.
Follow Houston Parks and Recreation Department guidelines for garden maintenance and hosting events.

Commitment: 1 year minimum is preferred

Want to get outdoors and lead people? Friends of Woodland Park (FWP) is looking for 4-6 people to manage logistics and materials for park work days. Volunteers annually remove 10-15,000 pounds of trash from the Little White Oak Bayou floodplain within Woodland Park.

FWP usually sponsors 7 community work days annually (Jan, Feb, Mar, April, Sept, Oct, Nov) plus Earth Day (corporate weekday event, April).  Scout projects may also require support. 

Friends of Woodland Park is an all volunteer organization and this is a volunteer opportunity. 

Expectations:

Cleanups are generally held on Saturday mornings, with occasional weekday cleanups for corporate groups. 

With help from the Beautification Director and FWP board, team members will identify supplies and tools needed using provided checklists. Supplies generally include FWP Flags, canopy, info kit, table cloth, gloves, trash grabbers, trash bags, water coolers and cups, snacks, first aid kit, bug spray and hand sanitizer. Tools such as shovels and wheel barrows are borrowed from and returned to Houston Tool Bank. 

Team members will gather equipment from storage located at 2515 Washington Avenue and any other supplies (such as snacks) and ensure that committee members can receive them on clean-up day or prior.  

Set up the supply distribution area and check-in table at Woodland Park Community Center located at 212 Parkview St. 

The JC Friends of the Library are a group of community members who meet every other month and volunteer to help the library. Sometimes the volunteering is helping with library events, tending the community garden, shelving books, or fundraising in the community. This meeting is where we plan and delegate tasks to individuals who are willing to help and discuss community needs! If you want to have an ongoing volunteer commitment for a good cause, this is the group for you! 

The Jacinto City Friends of the Library meet up every other month to volunteer their time to help the library. We are looking for community members who want to help at events, help fundraise, do tasks around the library, and contribute to conversations surrounding the needs of Houston's Eastside. This volunteering opportunity is ongoing and these meetings are used to delegate tasks to those willing to help out! Join us today!
