Volunteer: 2026 Plastic Free July: Kuhlman Gully Cleanups
What we throw away doesn’t go away
Even the smallest pieces of trash can have a ripple effect on marine life, communities, and future generations. As the second most productive estuary ↗ in the United States, Galveston Bay supports both wildlife and the people who depend on it. To help stop trash before it gets into the Bay, Galveston Bay Foundation is installing trash traps at three inland bayou sites. International soccer games being hosted in Houston this summer may impact the trash that enter our bayous. That is why we are hosting two cleanups and accompanying surveys on July 16th & 30th as a part of the regional Trash Free Gulf initiative ↗ during Plastic Free July ↗. We hope you will join us in cleaning up and monitoring trash levels to measure the impact. As a community cleanup volunteer, you and your team will: Use gloves, trash grabbers, buckets, and bags to collect and remove litter from the shoreline Participate in a litter audit Work in tandem at a site where we are conducting a Marine Debris Survey, helping remove debris after the survey has been completed in random transects If you encounter them, help remove small plastic pellets called nurdles, which are especially common near the check-in areaNo experience is necessary.
As an Inventory Support Volunteer, you will: Work with Team Leads to count, sort, and organize supplies and materials Restock break point bins and prepare equipment for deployment Assist with organizing event resources that support volunteers and riders across the route Help create a smooth and efficient foundation for a successful Bike Around the BayNo prior experience needed. Staff will provide guidance and direction throughout the day. Please bring a reusable water bottle and snacks. Restrooms and wi-fi are available onsite. Be prepared for standing, walking, and light lifting throughout the shift. Getting There Search for “EcoCenter Sponsored by Reliant” when using Google Maps - View site on Google.com . From TX-99 and W Bay Rd/Old F-M Rd 1405 Head north to turn into Bayer Rd. Turn left on the restricted road; you will see an EcoCenter directional sign (its like a small yard sign with a blue arrow). Volunteer: Volunteer bike mechanic -- put your skills to workIf you know how to fix a bike, Freewheels Houston needs you. Our volunteers repair donated bikes that go to refugees, veterans and young people from low-income families in Houston — people who depend on these bikes to get to work and school. Last year our mechanics repaired and distributed more than 640 bikes. The bottleneck is always skilled hands. Our shop is well equipped with tools, parts and a repair checklist developed with input from a master bike technician. If you know most bike systems — drivetrain, shifting, brakes, wheels and tires, handlebars and steering — you will be repairing bikes on your first visit. If you're still building your skills, our experienced volunteers are generous with what they know. Before your first shift, please complete our waiver: https://www.freewheelshouston.org/waiver. A parent or guardian must complete this waiver on behalf of a volunteer younger than 18 years of age. Agency: Freewheels Houston If you know how to fix a bike, Freewheels Houston needs you. Volunteer: Volunteer Online as a Conversation PartnerReady to change a life from the comfort of home? Join ENGin as a conversation partner and be matched with a learner in Ukraine for weekly one-on-one English conversations. In just one hour a week, you can help someone build confidence, break the language barrier, and feel supported, all while discovering a new culture and making a genuine human connection. We’ll pair you up with a learner in Ukraine for weekly one hour videochats at times that are convenient for you. During your conversations, you’ll facilitate English practice for your partner, learn about each other’s cultures, and offer an empathetic, authentic space for connection. Our only requirements for volunteers are English fluency, a strong internet connection, and the ability to commit to one hour a week for a minimum of 12 weeks. No prior tutoring experience or knowledge of Ukrainian language is needed to volunteer with ENGin. We offer ample training resources, session materials, and total flexibility to customize your sessions to fit your/your partner’s goals and preferences. Our friendly team is available to support you throughout your time with us. Since our launch in 2020, ENGin has matched over 32,000 volunteers with Ukrainians for authentic English-language connection across borders, and we continue to grow every day. 99% of our learners report feeling they were able to break the language barrier as a participant in our program, and 79% of our participants form lasting friendships. We're incredibly proud of these results, and we can't wait to welcome you into this global community of volunteers making them possible. Here's what three ENGin volunteers say about their experience. "I made a friend in Ukraine and we are teaching each other about our culture, our language, and our humor. We're even trading dad jokes! Both of us look forward to our chats and have a hard time wrapping it up." “Fantastic organization doing great work. So happy to be a small part of it. My partner and I have worked together for two years and have become good friends! Her English has become better, and I have become more knowledgeable about Ukraine!” "This program has been, I think, life-changing for both of us. I really consider her more like my daughter right now. That's how close we have become!" Ready to Get Started?
