Needs From: Volunteer Houston

Volunteer: Box and Prepare Toys for Distribution to Houston Children

Participants will assist with organizing and preparing a large donation of toys and essential items that will be shared with families across Houston. Items are currently located at the Houston Police Department downtown facility and will be sorted, boxed, and prepared for transport. Participants will also assist with loading the boxes onto a truck and unloading them at a nearby downtown warehouse where the items will be stored and distributed through local community organizations.

This effort will help move thousands of toys and essential goods that will be shared with children and families throughout the city. Activities include sorting toys, packing boxes, lifting and moving items, and assisting with loading and unloading trucks as part of a coordinated community distribution effort.

The opportunity will take place Saturday and Sunday from 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM, with two 4-hour shifts available each day. Participants may choose either shift or both. A brief orientation will take place at the beginning of each shift to review the process and safety guidelines. Water and snacks will be provided.

Comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes are recommended, as activities involve light to moderate lifting and warehouse-style work.

Volunteer: Donate your used bike

Freewheels accepts bike donations on Friday and Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon  at our shop at 6020 Jessamine #103, Houston, TX 77081. If you have a question, please email us at info@freewheelshouston.org.

The bike you are not riding holds the key to freedom for a refugee, veteran or young person who needs a way to work or school. Donate your bike to Freewheels and our volunteers will clean and repair it and provide a way for people to get to work or school.

Our greatest need is for adult mountain bikes and hybrids with 26-inch and 700c wheels. We also need youth bikes with 24-inch wheels and 20-inch wheels.

Read more: One bike donor's story

Our refugee and veteran customers rarely ask for road bikes or beach cruisers. We do not accept used helmets, small children’s bikes, scooters or tag-alongs. If it’s not economic for Freewheels to repair a donated used bike, we often reclaim parts and components that can be used on other bikes. We have partnerships with people who will take bikes we don’t plan to repair and deliver them to organizations in Mexico. When we receive a road bike, we may try to sell it and and use the proceeds to pay for parts, supplies, safety equipment and rent.

Volunteer: Care Kit Assembly & Distribution

Join Black United Fund of Texas for a hands-on volunteer event where we’ll assemble care kits for community members in need. Volunteers will help pack essential items like dental care supplies, hand sanitizer, wipes, band-aids, and include a handwritten note to add a personal touch of encouragement.
This is a meaningful and easy way to make a direct impact in a short amount of time, and all ages are welcome. Donations for care kit bags and supplies will be accepted during the event but are not required to sign up—your time and heart are what matter most!

We will also be accepting donations leading up to this event. So if you would like to donate items beforehand, please contact Marissa Hines at marissa@buftx.org to coordinate drop off.
