The Holiday season is a time to be filled with joy and happiness, for some this may not be the case. All children and teens deserve to have something under the Christmas tree on Christmas morning. This is where we need your help.  We need new unwrapped toys for the Holiday season. The age range from newborn to 18.  I know sometimes it is hard to buy for teens so gift cards are welcome too.  Gift cards for fast food, Walmart, Target , Amazon are great examples. We need volunteer support to help us sort and organize our donation closet! Our closet is a vital way for refugee families to select essential items like clothes, hygiene items, and kitchenware. With the number of donations we received, the closet can get disorganized quickly. Because of this, we are looking for volunteers to help sort and organize our donation closet so the families we serve can have a safe and easy time finding the items they need to acclimate in Houston.

This is a flexible opportunity and can be done in our offices during office hours (8:30am-5pm, Monday-Friday)

All volunteers must attend a volunteer orientation, fill out an application, and submit a background check in order to volunteer with IMGH Refugee Services. If you are interested, please reach out to CEVolunteer@imgh.org. 

Do you know how to repair a bike? Freewheels Houston volunteers repair bikes that will be given to refugees, veterans emerging from homelessness and young people from low-income families to enable them to get to work or school and explore the city.

Freewheels Houston's shop has the tools and parts you will need. Bike shop mechanics should be familiar with most bike systems.

We use a repair checklist developed with input from a master bike technician.

If you don’t know all the systems, our volunteers enjoy sharing their knowledge and can help get you up to speed. If you are already an expert, you will start getting questions from other volunteers looking to improve their skills.

The Administrative Assistant - Volunteer reports to the Operations Manager and has the responsibility for handling the administrative duties related to strategic planning and special projects.  The duties of the Administrative Assistant include providing support to our managers and employees, assisting with daily office needs, and managing our company’s general administrative activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide front office coverage – guests, phones, mail.

Answer all incoming phone calls and in-person inquiries, transferring them to the appropriate person.

Maintain an orderly appearance of the front desk/reception area, protecting confidential information.

Update and maintain office policies and procedures.

Provide general support to visitors.

Maintain program files, working with vendor for off-site storage/retrieval.

Create/maintain documents and spreadsheets for special projects.

Assist with contract management.

Develop and maintain appropriate filling systems.

Distribute, collect, and summarize program surveys.

Keep staff informed.

Participate in staff meetings as needed.

Perform other tasks as assigned.

Commit to working at least 1-2 days a week; 4 or 8-hour shifts.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Microsoft Office applications and data entry experience. Advanced Microsoft Office training is a plus.

High school diploma, with technical or advanced education preferred.

Bilingual in Spanish/English preferred

Additional qualifications as an Administrative Assistant will be a plus.

Possess strong writing, speaking, and organizational skills.

Ability to work independently or as part of a team, with minimal direction.

As a Tour Guide, you will share the history of the structures in Sam Houston Park with visitors from around the world by providing tours of the historic structures. This rewarding program allows you to increase your knowledge of local history and develop new connections. Tour Guide training prepares you to discuss Houston and Texas history as well as the decorative arts and lifestyles represented in the structures.

This position is similar to the tour guide position, except that your main focus will be on giving tours to school groups. This position is perfect for people who work with children often, especially in an educational setting. Children’s Educators do not need to know all the houses as there are specific ones included in our curriculum for different age groups. We mostly handle kids from kindergarten to eighth grade. Children’s educators are also asked to help with girl and boy scout badge workshops, which allow for more one on one time with children and more activity oriented learning.  Background check required.

Are you tech-savvy and like to help behind the scenes for live media events? If you are a pro at optimizing the use of your cell phone apps, have social media experience, and know traditional media, then we could use your talents here! Behind-the-scenes duties include setting up the set, running errands, breaking down the set, meeting guests, and assisting a show host before, during, and after a show. All our events are in Downtown Houston, and our museum has free parking.

These volunteers get to work hands-on with real historic artifacts. Their duties include organizing the archives, cataloguing artifacts that are not accessioned, and checking that previous artifact records are correct. This may also entail conducting your own research on specific items if information is missing. Background check required.

Bring Houston’s history alive for people who cannot personally visit the park. Outreach programs include children’s trunk shows and presentations about local history, architecture, customs, and people. We also have an educational booth program that brings booths on different aspects of Houston history to events at other organizations.

Volunteers are needed for a variety of special events, programs, and activities. This includes Scout Badge Workshops, culture and art festivals in Sam Houston Park and on Bagby Street, Juneteenth celebration, and Annual Candlelight Tours. Volunteer calls for special events happen over email about a month prior to the event. Because these opportunities happen less often, special event volunteers are only required to volunteer at four events a year to stay on the active roster.

Ever wonder where those Red Barrel donations go – they go to your local food pantry!

Volunteers are needed to pick up Red Barrel food donations from two nearby grocery stores in the Cypress area and deliver donations to the Cy-Fair Helping Hands Community Food Pantry at 9204 Emmott Road on a Monday or Thursday morning between the hours of 9:00 am – 12:30 pm. Volunteers must be over 18, have a large vehicle (e.g., pick-up truck, van or SUV) and car insurance. This is a relatively flexible position that doesn’t require a lot of time commitment yet contributes significantly to our mission to bring hope to the homeless and hungry!

Volunteers are needed to register new and returning clients, validate eligibility, inform clients of upcoming events and run reports. Adopt A Cat is a non-profit, no-kill cat shelter that cares for the abandoned and relinquished cats of the Greater Houston Area.

Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and foster homeless felines until safe, caring, and permanent homes are found for them.

We are a grassroots organization whose success and growth is a result of caring individuals working together in their communities to rescue cats.

We need volunteers who can help with the day-to-day direct care of the cats and the shelter, including things such as:

Anyone interested must be comfortable being around and handling cats, as many of our cats are outside of cages and are allowed to freely roam the shelter.

At Adopt A Cat, we know that it takes more than just a roof over a cats head to consider them saved and ready for a new home.

Many of our cats were previously strays, or have just left their homes for an extended period of time for what is likely the first time in their lives.

We want all of our residents to receive love, comfort, and specialized time that works with their comfort level. Whether that means lap time with lots of pets, playing with wand toys from a distance, or even just staying safely inside of their cage while listening to someone talk about their day, every cat can start or continue the socialization process somewhere.

We are looking for volunteers who are comfortable with being around and handling cats who can come in to the shelter and spend time with all of our kitties to help them flourish into the happy and healthy cats we know that they can be. This will also help them to get ready for adoption and entering their new homes.

(We'll absolutely understand if there is some bribing with treats and catnip that occurs during the process.)

One of the most important aspects of the shelter is building up and maintaining the health of our cats, and that is accomplished in part by visits to the vet.

Unfortunately, our shelter vehicle has been of service to us for many, many years now and the toll of that is starting to show itself.

Between the state of our car, the general (and sometimes unexpectedly intense) busyness that comes from the average day, and understaffing, we are relying largely on volunteers to help us get the cats to and from their vet appointments in a timely manner.

Outside of assisting in our cats overcoming existing and/or sudden health issues, you will also be helping them get ready to go to their new forever homes, as every cat that we adopt out is spayed/neutered, vaccinated, combo tested, flea treated, dewormed, and receives any other essential medical care that is necessary to get them on the path to recovery.

Child Watch volunteers engage with our clients' children, ages 4 to 11. Child Watch is open on Saturdays and Thursday evenings.

Members of our Professional Women's Group can leave their children in the center while they're in the building for workshops and professional growth programs. This is an important service because it helps to guarantee that childcare is not a barrier to women who are seeking to change and improve their lives.

Responsibilities: Volunteers will engage and interact in developmentally appropriate activities while in the Child Watch room. They will maintain a safe and positive environment for the children. This may mean leading a craft, reading, etc. Volunteers will also be responsible for dispensing snacks and drinks and cleaning up the room at the end of the shift.

Child Watch Volunteer Times: Two Saturdays each month: 8:30A-11:30A; 11:30A- 2:30P

Do you enjoy chess? Are you an avid player, either competitively or recreationally? We have the volunteer opportunity for you! Bayou Village School is a small non-profit elementary school located in the Near Northside community. We have a fledgling chess club, started last year under the supervision of parent volunteers. Chess club participants are in 2nd-6th grade (ages 7 through 11). Typically there are 10-15 students who participate. Two parent volunteers are present for each chess club gathering for behavior management and hands-on support. 

We are seeking a person or people with chess awareness and ability- you do not have to have prior experience as a chess coach (but it would be a plus!) Students in our chess club have a good mastery of the basics and are ready to take their play to the next level. Chess club meeting days can be flexible- we typically meet twice a month from 3:30-5pm. Days can be selected that work with the coach's schedule! 

We work with homeless youths between the ages of 18-30. We provide clothing, a home cooked meal, resources to the community and their needs at the time.

We are looking for volunteers to help out in the kitchen preparing the meal, cleaning dishes, greeting our youths, helping our youths in the clothing room, visiting with them at the table, No Experience is needed to volunteer with our wonderful team and our youths.

Our mission is to provide a safe, affirming environment for youth and young adults experiencing homelessness regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, disability, and/or other identities. We firmly believe in meeting our participants where they are, without judgment or expectation, and letting them guide us toward their individual needs.

TERJA hosts monthly workshops in the Houston community focused on Menstrual Health for girls and young women. These workshops address crucial topics, including menstrual health equity, period poverty, sustainable solutions, and breaking the silence, shame, and stigma associated with menstruation. Participants watch videos and listen to stories from girls and young women in Kenya who are combating period poverty by creating reusable sanitary pads using local materials. The workshops include discussions on TERJA’s reusable sanitary pads, which are made from organic, biodegradable materials, and explore how sustainable, eco-friendly solutions can help alleviate period poverty. A local tailor will demonstrate how to create reusable pads and underwear using both sewing machines and traditional hand sewing techniques. Following the demonstration, attendees participate in hands-on activities, where they create their own reusable pads, underwear, and bags, with ongoing support provided. We are seeking volunteers to serve as facilitators during these workshops.

Volunteers will be required to attend an orientation and training session before the first workshop. Your involvement will be instrumental in empowering girls and young women through education and practical skills.

We are looking for followers of Jesus who love soccer and are passionate about helping kids develop strong life skills and values. We provide free soccer practice at various local schools in Alief ISD Monday-Thursday 5:00-6:30pm. As a volunteer, you would be working with the head coach to follow the provided practice curriculum. The curriculum guides you through warm ups, soccer technique, drills, and activities. The unique thing about our program is that all of our soccer sessions are based around a Bible story and life value. We use soccer as a tool to instill valuable life lessons about character and personal development into the players. We are looking for volunteers to help out in the kitchen preparing the meal, cleaning dishes, greeting our youths, helping our youths in the clothing room, visiting with them at the table, No Experience is needed to volunteer with our wonderful team and our youths.

Our mission is to provide a safe, affirming environment for youth and young adults experiencing homelessness regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, disability, and/or other identities. We firmly believe in meeting our participants where they are, without judgment or expectation, and letting them guide us toward their individual needs.

We are looking for a volunteer to help us set up digital signage on the tv in our lobby. We would like it to show photos and important announcements using an app to update. Volunteer will provide us with options for apps and help us get it set up.

The Agape Homes Program exists to preserve affordability and create a pathway to homeownership for neighbors in OST/South Union who otherwise could not afford to remain in this gentrifying community. Agape Development will be building duplexes in the neighborhood as a part of the Agape Homes Program. We have the architectural drawings in CAD and need renderings created that will represent the final product.

Due to disasters occuring acrosss the country, the American Red Cross Texas Gulf Coast region is looking for volunteers to deploy to our neighboring regions to assist with disaster relief.
