Volunteer: Shamba Ya Amani Farm Work Day

Everyone is welcome to participate in Shamba Days. You’ll help with whatever the farm may need... mulching, weeding, planting, harvesting, and more!

Shamba Ya Amani, the Farm of Peace, is working for justice by feeding our community, both body and soul. We feed the body by growing vegetables and fruit, raising honeybees, and tending flowers. We feed the soul by building this farm together, forming a connection to each other and to the earth we are cultivating.

Bring a bottle of water and wear long pants and closed-toe shoes or boots!

Shamba Ya Amani (Farm of Peace) can be found at this address:
8401 Dairy View Lane
Houston, TX 77072
There is parking along the street and a Metro bus station nearby at Beechnut and Dairy View Lane. Look for our white circle sign near the street and a sunflower mural as you approach the entrance of the farm.

Volunteer: Come Hide from Search Dogs - 57 Acre Park

We are looking for people to come out and hide for search dogs while they are training. These people need to be willing to come out for at least a few hours and be willing to run, walk, and hide from the dogs in all different types of scenarios. When found by the dog, they should also be willing to play with the dog per the handler's instructions or offer the dog it's treat reward. It is a lot of fun and a unique experience to help these dogs out!

You'll be provided with a location to walk to in order to "hide" from the canines. The canines will then come find the missing person. Of course, you will never actually be missing, but we always need new people to pretend to be missing. We will be enjoying nature, so dress appropriately with closed-toed shoes and comfortable pants. Be sure to bring water, sunscreen, bug spray and maybe a good book or electronic device to keep you busy during the down time. All high school students or older are welcome to participate. Feel free to view our website to see what we are about: www.AlphaSar.org.

A confirmation email will be sent after sign-up to confirm your volunteer slot. A waiver will be attached. Any participants under 16 years old will need to be accompanied by an adult during their volunteer time.

Volunteer: 2025 The Holiday Project’s Christmas Day Visit to The Gardens of Bellaire

2025 The Holiday Project's Christmas Day Visit and Caroling at

The Gardens of Bellaire

4620 Bellaire Blvd

Bellaire, 77401

713-665-3888 (facility)

Meeting Location:

Cedric Branch - Activity Director

Jessica Maxwell - activity dept.

The Holiday Project team leader with instructions for room visits and caroling:

They have approx 90 residents (making or buying cards is only if you want to be guaranteed a card to pass out) any amount of cards are appreciate.

Bring the Spirit of a Holiday to Those Who Otherwise Might Not Have a Celebration! Make a Difference!! Brighten someone’s holiday and help them know they have not been forgotten.

Time spent at the facilities will vary, but generally the visits last from about 1 to 2 hours, depending on the size of the facility and other circumstances unique to the team and the facility. (Sometimes the staff on duty want us to visit in a communal area of the facility such as a recreation room or dining hall. Other times we are invited to do both a communal visit and then break into small clusters to visit room-to-room for those persons who don't get out of their rooms. Which of these approaches is used also affects the total length of time we spend at a particular facility.)

Upon arrival: Meet in Lobby until volunteers all arrive, typically until about 10:10 am

In the note section of this sign up, please add how many will be visiting.

Visit Policies:
1. Remember that you are in a medical facility. Be aware and be careful.
2. Do not assist a resident in moving from or to a wheelchair. Ask an employee to help.
3. Do not feed or offer food to residents unless directed by an employee.
4. When entering a resident’s room, always knock and introduce yourself as a volunteer. Ask permission before entering.
5. Stay with the group as you move through the facility.
6. Do not go into isolation rooms, those rooms will be marked with a sign to see staff before entering. If you are passing out cards please give staff cards for residents in isolation rooms.
7. Because of HIPAA Privacy Rules most facilities require a signed photo release for pictures of/with residents. Therefore no pictures of resident's faces are allowed on The Holiday Project visits. The best way to take a picture is taking the back of the resident and the faces of the volunteers. The experience can still be documented in a picture without the resident's face.
8. It is not required but volunteers can make handmade Christmas cards to pass out during the visit.
9. Have Fun! Together we CAN make a difference and REMEMBER...
"To the world you may be one person but to one person you may be the world!"

Participant Notes:
Please make sure you are in good health for the visit and have not recently had Covid or the Flu or anything contagious!!

Merry Christmas!

Volunteer: 2025 The Holiday Project’s Christmas Day Visit to Park Manor of the Woodlands

2025 The Holiday Project's Christmas Day Visit and Caroling at

Park Manor of the Woodlands

1014 Windsor Lakes Blvd.

The Woodlands, 77384

(936) 273-9424 (facility)

Meeting Location:

Yessika Drayton - Activity Director

Mayra - Activity Assistant

They have approx 94 residents (making or buying cards is only if you want to be guaranteed a card to pass out)

Upon arrival: Meet in Lobby at Park Manor of the Woodlands until volunteers all arrive, typically until about 10:10 am

Volunteer: 2026 Spring Bi-Annual Plant Sale: Event Support

Help Native Plants Find New Homes

Every spring, Galveston Bay Foundation hosts a community native plant sale to help residents bring more habitat into their own backyards and neighborhoods. This year we will be concurrently hosting a Rain Barrel Workshop for those interested in learning about water conservation for the Bay.

As an Event Support Volunteer, you’ll help maintain plant organization, restock inventory as needed, and provide support to staff and customers throughout the event.

By helping us prepare plants for sale, you make it easier for residents to choose native species that benefit pollinators, birds, and the greater Galveston Bay watershed.

This is a physically active volunteer role involving light lifting and organizing. Restrooms are available onsite. Refreshments and snacks will be provided.

Please check in with GBF staff inside the BBQ shed upon arrival. You will receive a quick orientation and task overview before setup begins.

Parking & Where to Meet
We will meet at Walter Hall Park at the BBQ Shed adjacent to the Community Center. When entering the park, continue to go straight and park in the first parking lot. You will see a GBF truck and trailer in the next lot over. Give yourself enough time to park and use the restroom so you are ready to help at the start of your shift.
