Needs From: Volunteer Houston

Volunteer: Halo House Front Desk Volunteers

We are looking for people who are passionate about what we do, are great communicators, love working as part of a team, and have positive energy and personalities. If this describes you we would be happy for you to become a part of the Halo House team and donate your time and talents to our mission.

At Halo House, there are a lot of things that need to be done – answering phones, assisting guests, moving in new residents, pulling weeds, minor repairs, and everything in between. Whether you want to volunteer with a group or just on your own, we have something for everyone.

Our Mission: Halo House Foundation supports blood cancer patients and their caregivers by providing affordable, fully furnished, temporary apartment housing to enable access to lifesaving treatment in the Texas Medical Center.

Our Vision: One day, no one battling blood cancer will have to worry about where they are going to live during treatment in Houston, or going bankrupt while paying for living, eating and parking expenses here, and their rent or mortgage back home. We believe that providing a “home away from home” and easing the family’s financial burden, their focus can be directed toward healing.

Qualifications: We are looking for people with good verbal and written communication skills, basic knowledge of Word and Excel, familiarity with the Halo House website and services we offer and who want to contribute to something bigger than themselves.

Experience you DON’T need: Information systems, knowledge of blood cancers, knowledge of doctors or other existing housing facilities in the Texas Medical Center, or apartment management experience.

If this volunteer opportunity is for you, we'll train you, match you with a group of adult learners and support you as you get started on the exciting and hugely rewarding activity of helping your neighbors learn English as a second (or third!) language (ESL).

Classes are held Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday, mornings and evenings. Training to teach fall classes will be offered in July. Fall classes start in late August.

Volunteer: Harbor Hospice Needs Veterans

At Harbor Hospice, we are dedicated to honoring the men and women who have fought for our freedom. There are many historic stories within the hearts of our patients. However, most of the time, the only person that a veteran will open up to is another veteran. Those of you who have walked in similar shoes, trained, fought in war, and experienced life inside and out of the military. We hope you will consider making a difference in the lives of our veterans. Join our vet to vet program today.
