Volunteer: Play Hide and Seek with Search Dogs at Forest Glen Camp (2025)

Alpha Search and Recovery will be hosting a search and rescue canine seminar in Huntsville, Texas. We are looking for people to come and hide for the search dogs while they are training. These volunteers will need to be able to commit to a 5-hour shift and be willing to run, walk, and hide from the dogs in all different types of scenarios. When found by the dog, they should be willing to play with the dog per the handler's instructions or offer the dog their treat reward. It is a lot of fun and a unique experience to help these dogs out!

During your volunteer time, you'll be provided with various locations to walk to in order to "hide" from the canines. The canines will then come find you in order to practice real missing person scenarios. Of course, you will never actually be missing, but we always need new people to pretend to be missing. We will be enjoying nature, so dress appropriately with closed-toed shoes and comfortable pants. Be sure to bring water, sunscreen, bug spray and maybe a good book or electronic device to keep you busy during the down time. All high school students or older are welcome to participate; all minors under 16 years old will need to be accompanied by an adult during their volunteer time. Check out our website to learn more about Alpha Search and Recovery.

A confirmation email will be sent the week before the event with a waiver link included.

Volunteer: Woodland Park Green Team

Want to get outdoors and lead people? Friends of Woodland Park (FWP) is looking for 4-6 people to manage logistics and materials for park work days. Volunteers annually remove 10-15,000 pounds of trash from the Little White Oak Bayou floodplain within Woodland Park.

FWP usually sponsors 7 community work days annually (Jan, Feb, Mar, April, Sept, Oct, Nov) plus Earth Day (corporate weekday event, April).  Scout projects may also require support.

Friends of Woodland Park is an all volunteer organization and this is a volunteer opportunity.

Expectations:

Cleanups are generally held on Saturday mornings, with occasional weekday cleanups for corporate groups.

With help from the Beautification Director and FWP board, team members will identify supplies and tools needed using provided checklists. Supplies generally include FWP Flags, canopy, info kit, table cloth, gloves, trash grabbers, trash bags, water coolers and cups, snacks, first aid kit, bug spray and hand sanitizer. Tools such as shovels and wheel barrows are borrowed from and returned to Houston Tool Bank.

Team members will gather equipment from storage located at 2515 Washington Avenue and any other supplies (such as snacks) and ensure that committee members can receive them on clean-up day or prior.

Volunteer: Dog Behavior & Enrichment Volunteers

At Friends For Life, every animal matters. Founded in 2002, Friends For Life introduced the first no-kill shelter model to Houston – saving animals regardless of their breed, age or condition.

Houston-grown, we’re here to help our neighbors care for the pets they love.

We’re not finished until every animal has a safe home. Until then, we’ll be innovating, improving and tracking results to find the most effective ways to save lives.

As a dog behavior volunteer, you will work hand-in-hand with our behavior staff and learn how to work with the dogs in our program.  The dogs that live at the shelter are dogs that we have not been able to get out into a foster home due to reactivity that needs to be managed. This could include an array of behaviors. Maybe they're afraid of other dogs, or scared of loud trucks outside. We will fully train you on dog body language, enrichment, and reactivity so you are able to safely work with these dogs to help rehabilitate them and in turn find their forever homes! This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity that other shelters don't offer. If you truly love dogs and want to learn more about how to care for them, this opportunity is for you!

As a dog behavior volunteer, you will help provide various enrichment needs to our dogs (think kongs and nose work!). Enrichment volunteers are essential to help improve the daily lives of our dogs at the shelter.* Our Behavior volunteer program is a five-step program, and you'll start out as a BV1 volunteer (behavior volunteer - level 1). Our behavior program is truly one-of-a-kind. You'll learn such much, like how animals communicate, different types of enrichment, how to read body language, learning theory, and so much more.

Current Behavior Dog Volunteer shifts from from 2-5PM every day - including weekends.

Sign up today to help our dogs get the socialization and enrichment that they deserve!

Note - This need is ongoing. Please disregard the "runs until" date attached to this need.

Volunteer: Come Hide from Search Dogs - Christia Adair Park

We are looking for people to come out and hide for search dogs while they are training. These people need to be willing to come out for at least a few hours and be willing to run, walk, and hide from the dogs in all different types of scenarios. When found by the dog, they should also be willing to play with the dog per the handler's instructions or offer the dog it's treat reward. It is a lot of fun and a unique experience to help these dogs out!

You'll be provided with a location to walk to in order to "hide" from the canines. The canines will then come find the missing person. All high school students or older are welcome to participate. Feel free to view our website to see what we are about: www.AlphaSar.org.

A confirmation email will be sent after sign-up to confirm your volunteer slot. A waiver will be attached. Any participants under 16 years old will need to be accompanied by an adult during their volunteer time.

The address for this location is the closest address to the Suncreek Estates park. If you navigate to the address and drive to the end of the street, you will see a park with a parking lot where the Alpha SAR team will be staged.

Agency: Alpha Search And Recovery

We are looking for people to come out and hide for search dogs while they are training. These people need to be willing to come out for at least a few hours and be willing to run, walk, and hide from the dogs in all different types of scenarios. When found by the dog, they should also be willing to play with the dog per the handler's instructions or offer the dog it's treat reward. It is a lot of fun and a unique experience to help these dogs out!

You'll be provided with a location to walk to in order to "hide" from the canines. The canines will then come find the missing person. All high school students or older are welcome to participate. Feel free to view our website to see what we are about: www.AlphaSar.org.

Volunteer: Come Hide from Search Dogs - Kitty Hollow Park

We are looking for people to come out and hide for search dogs while they are training. These people need to be willing to come out for at least a few hours and be willing to run, walk, and hide from the dogs in all different types of scenarios. When found by the dog, they should also be willing to play with the dog per the handler's instructions or offer the dog it's treat reward. It is a lot of fun and a unique experience to help these dogs out!

You'll be provided with a location to walk to in order to "hide" from the canines. The canines will then come find the missing person.

We will be meeting in the parking lot by the Veteran's Memorial.

Volunteer: Donate your used bike

Your unused bicycles hold the key to freedom for a refugee, veteran or young person who needs a way to work or school.  Donate your unused bike to Freewheels and our volunteers will clean and repair it and provide a way for people to get to work or school.

Our greatest need is for adult mountain bikes and hybrids with 26-inch and 700c wheels. We also need youth bikes with 24-inch wheels.

Our refugee and veteran customers rarely ask for road bikes or beach cruisers. We do not accept used helmets, children’s bikes, scooters or tag-alongs. If it’s not economic for Freewheels to repair a donated used bike, we often reclaim parts and components that can be used on other bikes.

We have partnerships with people who will take bikes we don’t plan to repair and deliver them to organizations in Mexico. When we receive a road bike, we may try to sell it and and use the proceeds to pay for parts, supplies, safety equipment and rent.

Freewheels accepts bike donations on Friday and Saturday mornings.

Hours: Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. – noon
