Young Homeowners League is a 501c3 nonprofit to empower high schoolers and other youths to work, save, buy land, build starter homes, and become young homeowners.
Revolving fund will be used to acquire lower priced land to develop into lots, with target cost $30k each.
Our first focus area is within the City of Houston with sewer line, and our second is communities within a one-hour commute of Houston.
We organize youths into project teams with experienced members to build starter homes, 1000 to 1400 sqft size, starting $120/sqft.
Young team members earn the majority share (80%) of project labor costs, with experienced members receiving 20%.
Team members have priority to purchase the homes they help build, at cost.

Role Description
An Affordable Homeownership Champion is an unpaid volunteer role, unless actively participating in construction work, in which case compensation comes from the experienced members portion (20%) of labor costs.
Champions can contribute in one or more of the following ways:
1. Help future homeowners, including yourself, plan to work, save, build credit, invest in land, support the construction of starter homes, and prepare for homeowner.
2. Support or supervise construction teams (ideal for teachers, retirees, tradespeople, or business professionals) building starter homes, especially part-time or during summer.
3. If you own land or a home and need a shed or smaller home built, consider placing an order through our project teams. Shed reference $35/sqft. Home within 1400 sqft reference $120/sqft
4. Help connect us with organizations offering grants or low-interest loans for our land revolving fund.
5. If you can put money into our revolving fund as a loan, let’s talk.
6. Help design starter homes that are attractive, efficient, using lower cost materials, and easier to build especially for less experienced youths.

Key Responsibilities: Monitor the financial health of the organization and review financial statements, budgets, and financial planning documents.

Budgeting & Reporting:

Oversee the development of the annual budget and ensure financial reports are accurate and timely.

Present regular financial reports to the board.

Compliance & Controls:

Ensure compliance with tax and financial reporting requirements.

Monitor internal controls and financial risk management practices.

Support Staff/Finance Team:

Work closely with the Finance Director/Manager, if applicable.

Support fundraising and grant management from a financial oversight perspective.

Key Responsibilities:  To lead the board’s efforts in securing financial resources to support the mission of the organization.

Fundraising Strategy:

Develop and oversee the organization’s fundraising strategy in collaboration with staff and the board.

Set fundraising goals and ensure the board is actively engaged in reaching them.

Donor Engagement:

Cultivate relationships with major donors, sponsors, and supporters.

Encourage and support board members in their fundraising and donor stewardship roles.

Campaign Leadership:
Lead or support capital campaigns, annual giving, grant efforts, and special fundraising events.

Work closely with development staff (if present) to align efforts.

Reporting & Monitoring:

Monitor fundraising performance and report progress to the board regularly.

Identify opportunities for growth and diversification of funding sources.

Key Responsibilities:To ensure the board operates effectively, ethically, and in alignment with the organization’s bylaws and best governance practices.

Board Recruitment & Orientation:

Lead the recruitment, nomination, and onboarding of new board members.

Ensure new members receive appropriate orientation and training.

Board Development:

Organize ongoing training and development opportunities for board members.

Facilitate regular evaluations of board performance (individually and collectively).

Policy & Compliance Oversight:

Review and recommend updates to bylaws, policies, and governance procedures.

Ensure adherence to board roles, responsibilities, and ethical standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Oversight:

Develop and guide the organization’s marketing and communications strategy.

Legal Oversight:

Advise the board and executive leadership on legal issues affecting the organization.

Review key contracts, agreements, and legal documents as needed.

Risk Management:

Identify legal risks and recommend appropriate mitigation strategies.

Ensure appropriate insurance coverage and legal protections are in place.

Regulatory Compliance:

Ensure compliance with nonprofit laws, employment law, tax law, and other regulations.

Monitor and support filings such as IRS Form 990, charitable registrations, etc.

Policy Review:

Assist with drafting and reviewing policies related to governance, ethics, data protection, whistleblower protections, and conflict of interest.

Want to get outdoors and lead people? Friends of Woodland Park (FWP) is looking for 4-6 people to manage logistics and materials for park work days. Volunteers annually remove 10-15,000 pounds of trash from the Little White Oak Bayou floodplain within Woodland Park.

FWP usually sponsors 7 community work days annually (Jan, Feb, Mar, April, Sept, Oct, Nov) plus Earth Day (corporate weekday event, April).  Scout projects may also require support. 

Friends of Woodland Park is an all volunteer organization and this is a volunteer opportunity. 

Expectations:

Cleanups are generally held on Saturday mornings, with occasional weekday cleanups for corporate groups. 

With help from the Beautification Director and FWP board, team members will identify supplies and tools needed using provided checklists. Supplies generally include FWP Flags, canopy, info kit, table cloth, gloves, trash grabbers, trash bags, water coolers and cups, snacks, first aid kit, bug spray and hand sanitizer. Tools such as shovels and wheel barrows are borrowed from and returned to Houston Tool Bank. 

Team members will gather equipment from storage located at 2515 Washington Avenue and any other supplies (such as snacks) and ensure that committee members can receive them on clean-up day or prior.  

Set up the supply distribution area and check-in table at Woodland Park Community Center located at 212 Parkview St.

As a dog behavior volunteer, you will help provide various enrichment needs to our dogs (think kongs and nose work!). Enrichment volunteers are essential to help improve the daily lives of our dogs at the shelter.* Our Behavior volunteer program is a five-step program, and you'll start out as a BV1 volunteer (behavior volunteer - level 1). Do you love talking with people and have great communication/listening skills? We have the perfect volunteer position for you!

The Greeter will welcome people to the shelter, ask them what they need, and then provide basic details about adopting (including our adoption process), fostering, volunteering, or donating (depending on what the visitors has stopped in for). PetSmart Volunteer – We have some of our cats that show at the PetSmart cattery on South Shepherd and always need more volunteers who are interested in helping socialize the cats, clean the cages, feed the cats, and answer questions from the public.

Volunteers sort, assemble, and distribute grocery items for walk-up or drive thru clients. Volunteers may also help by registering clients using Houston Food Bank qualifications.

The Cabrini Center seeks the assistance of pro bono attorneys for both litigation and administrative cases.

Make a lasting impact in the life of a young person in foster care! Academic Coaches help students ages 14–17 build organizational skills, study skills, and provide homework support, while offering encouragement and consistency they can count on.

Youth in foster care often face major educational disruptions—frequent moves, multiple schools, and a lack of stable support. By volunteering just a few hours a week, you can help bridge that gap and empower them to reach their potential.

Training and ongoing support are provided. Sessions take place at Residential Treatment Centers across the greater Houston area, with flexible scheduling during out-of-school hours.

Our mentoring program is designed to support the growth of our students on the fields, in school, and in life. Mentors are matched with a SpringSpirit participant in grades 3-12 and commit to meet in person at least once a month.  Mentors must submit to a background check and go through an orientation process before being matched with a mentee.  2 locations in Northern Spring Branch.  

Help young people aging out of foster care successfully step into adulthood. As a Transition Coach, you’ll mentor and guide youth (ages 14+) as they create transition plans, explore education and career options, and build the skills they need for independence.

A caring adult can make all the difference for a youth who may not have consistent support. By meeting once a week, you can help them set goals, stay motivated, and navigate life’s next steps.

Help a child who is reading below grade level. Volunteers needed to work with elementary-age children once or twice a week on Zoom.  Program moderator creates virtual breakout rooms.  Volunteers work with small groups (2-4 students) from 4:30 to 5:30 one day a week. Simple lesson and materials provided for you.  

Groups meet twice a week on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday. Volunteers would need to commit to only once a week visits with their group of children for at least one semester. One hour training provided before you start as well as a background check. Program has proven results in improving student reading levels.  

This Holiday Season make a difference in a teen's life by SHAREing your heart & home with a high school exchange student! Volunteers, with or without children at home, are needed to host teenage boys and girls from Germany, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Mongolia, Japan, and several other countries. Families can review student applications and choose the boy or girl that matches their family. SHARE! students speak English, come medically insured, and have their own spending money for personal expenses. They attend the host family’s local high school for a school year or semester.

Volunteers at our front desk help the front desk staff with their day-to-day activities— answering the phones, returning messages, interacting with visitors, answering questions from the public, keeping up with the calendar, directing people to the right place for appointments, getting the appropriate people for appointments and interviews.

There are different administrative tasks we could always use volunteers to help with. If you are good with data entry type work, this may be the right fit for you!

Front desk volunteers are never left on their own at the front desk, they will always have a staff member working with them.

The HMC is proud to be home to soccer programs for our refugee youth. The Eagles (boys) and The Golden Eagles (girls).

The teams meet and play on the first and third Saturdays of each month, at the IndoorSoccerBox, located at 1530 W Sam Houston Pkwy N. Beginning in November, we'll be meeting at Burnett Bayland Park in Southwest Houston.

We are looking for someone with soccer experience to serve as a referee and informal coach to help facilitate 1 hour of girls soccer. It is a very casual league, the girls would benefit from the experience of someone 18+.

Youths under the age of 16 MUST be accompanied by an adult to volunteer. No previous experience needed.

Memorial Assistance Ministries is in need of a group of strong individuals for a manual labor project for one day. A detention pond next to our faculty is overgrown and we need a group to help us get it back under control. MAM does not have the equipment needed to fix this problem. So all equipment: weed-eaters, mowers and any other landscaping equipment would have to be brought to our faculty.   

We are looking for volunteers that have cashier experience and a sense of ‘high fashion’ to help run the Boutique, MAM’s premium high end fashion shop. This is a store within our MAM resale store, selling items such as designer clothes and purses, as well as items with original price tags, and packaging. Volunteers will monitor merchandise, provide customer service and run the cash register. Volunteers will even have the opportunity to develop displays and help with the overall visual aspect of the Boutique.

The Employment Follow-Up Volunteer serves as a key support to the Employment Services Program by conducting telephone follow-up calls to clients of the program. Through follow-up phone calls MAM seeks to determine each client’s employment status, the effectiveness of our program and/or to offer additional support and guidance to those who remain unemployed or those in new jobs who need additional support. Three-hour shifts are available five days a week. Calls are made on company telephones in a climate-controlled office environment. Volunteers will not meet with clients in person.

Have you been told that you have a calming effect on others especially on the phone?  A pleasant phone voice is needed to share agency information, services, and directions with participants and clients.  Provide assistance to Supervisor on special projects.  This is not a paid position.

Track first suit clients that have not returned to DFS Houston via follow-up call

Discuss different program options with the clients

Document the clients current job status

Assist with scheduling in the database

Answer phones and learn to schedule clients

Assist in various administrative tasks; scheduling, mailing etc.

Availability on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons preferred.

First Impressions volunteers work either one-on-one, or in small groups, with clients to help them increase the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to be successful in job interviews.  They provide practical information on preparing for interviews as well as an opportunity to practice their interview and presentation skills.  

Available shifts:

Monday-Thursday: 1:45-4P
Monday-Friday: 10:45-1P

Individuals who receive a court order to perform community service, or who must perform community service to qualify for WorkSource or Houston Housing, may complete their hours through the Houston Food Bank's Community Service Program in a friendly, safe, climate controlled and structured environment. Volunteer opportunities are available Monday through Saturday, morning, afternoon, evening. 

COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS DETAILS: 

Greet visitors as they enter the hospital. Provide patient information such as room location. The Information Desk also serves as the hospital concierge providing local restaurant and hotel information as well as calling for taxi service etc. Uniform required. Free parking provided.

Opossum and Pals Volunteers work up-close with nature in this busy emergency wildlife center where thousands of ill, injured and abandoned wildlife are admitted. Help is needed to care and feed the many orphaned wild animals that come to our facility during the year. Volunteer duties: feed wildlife, clean cages, prepare special diets, and the opportunity to learn special skills like administering hydration fluids sub-cutaneously, administering medication, and tubing of doves and opossums.  

Positions are open for Animal Caregivers who must be at least 18 years of age, and willing to learn and participate in all skills.  Positions for Animal Helpers are also available for those who only want to participate in the care and feeding of animals but not administer any medical duties. Helpers must be at least 14 years of age.

Volunteers are needed to assist the patients, their guest and the staff in the Cardiovascular, Intensive Care, General Surgery, and Ambulatory Surgery waiting areas of the hospital. Duties include greeting patients and their guest upon arrival, assisting with family visits to patients both pre-op and post-op, extending moral support to patients, loved ones, and generally serving as a liaison between the waiting and patient care areas

Weekly four-hour shifts are available between 7 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. on weekdays or weekends

Free valet or self-parking is provided. Volunteers also receive discounts in the cafeteria and gift shop

If you are extroverted, service-oriented volunteer this is the position for you.  Volunteers are needed to visit patients and their family members during their hospital stay to disseminate information about hospital procedures, amenities and area parking & hotel information.

Volunteers are needed in the Emergency Department to assist patients, their families and staff: Some of the duties this position performs:

Times Available: 3 or 4 hours shifts are available 

Monday through Friday between 11AM and 11PM

Volunteers receive FREE Parking while performing their volunteer service.

Gain valuable experience in a classroom setting through an internship with our ESL Program at MAM.  This is perfect for college students looking to gain experience in a classroom setting for school or resume building.  You do not need to be bilingual for this internship.

The ESL Internship is a non-paid position.  It is approx. 10-15 hours per week at MAM during the day hours and 2 evenings a week at our off-site class locations.  The hours during the day are flexible around your schedule. The evening hours are Tuesday and Thursdays from 6 PM- 9 PM.  

The intern will work to help our ESL Department reach new levels of design and function while they gain valuable on-the-job education and management experience.  As an intern, you will learn the operations and daily functions of an ESL and Citizenship program that supports immigrants and refugees in our community.  You will also learn how a nonprofit organization works to support the community and the plethora of programs we provide.

•Interns will have the opportunity to work in marketing with a focus on social media.

•Interns will be asked to assist staff with site management including but not limited to:  student registration, student retention, development of class curriculum, entry/exit assessments, end of semester celebrations.

•Interns will help supervise, schedule, and assist ESL/Citizenship/Tutoring volunteers in day to day site operations. 

We need volunteer readers for our new wonderful location in Spring Branch! Come make a positive impact in the lives of elementary students at the Kids' Reading Room! We are 501c3 nonprofit organization set up in 4 disadvantaged apartment communities in the Spring Branch area.

Volunteers promote literacy by reading with our students! Many of our students have no books at home and love reading with others! Build relationships with our students and become a mentor!

Volunteers needed Wednesdays 5pm - 6pm at our Spring Spirit Baseball Community Center location or at one of our Monday locations at 4:00pm - 5:15pm at Castlewood Apartments.

Volunteer once a week or bi-monthly. Great for groups to volunteer as well!

 The Volunteer Services department at Baylor St Luke's Medical Center is searching for compassionate, caring, friendly and reliable volunteers to become Volunteer Patient Companions.

 The Volunteer Patient Companion (VPC) Program is about improving the care, health and wellbeing of patients. VPCs will provide one-on-one time with patients.  As a volunteer you may read, talk, play games, or just provide companionship to a patient.   VPCs will be a valuable resource to many families that are unable to take time off to be in the hospital with family members who are patients. The VPCs is a member of the health care team who works under the direct supervision of an RN.  The VPC may provide assistance in transporting and transferring patients. 

 This volunteer opportunity requires a minimum 4 hour commitment per week.  Volunteer shifts are available 7 days a week from 7am – 11am, 11am – 2pm, 2pm – 6pm, 6pm – 9pm. 

 This volunteer opportunity is great for students who are currently enrolled or contemplating entering into a healthcare program such as nursing, patient care attendants, physicians and many others.

 Valet parking is provided free of charge.

The Client Outreach Specialist volunteer will make follow-up calls to clients in order to track those that have had a first suiting, but have not returned to Dress for Success Houston for a second suiting, or for Job Search 101. The volunteer’s conversation will directly impact the client and the agency as they will ask and document various questions while guiding the client to various programs that are dependent on their current circumstances.

Dress for Success Houston's Merchandising Volunteers are vital to thedaily operations at DFSH. Merchandisers sort, organize and process donations. They also ensure that our store is up-to-date for our clients making it easier to find that perfect interview suit.

Volunteers are needed to assist in our store, Reflections, selling adaptive aids in a retail setting including catalog and telephone orders on weekdays. Retail experience may be beneficial but is not required for this opportunity.

Veterans needed to volunteer for various opportunities related to mentoring, minor construction, project management, homeless outreach, community involvement, and overall improvement in the lives of our community's veteran population.

The sales from MAM's Resale Store & Boutique help to fund our programs, which helps nearly 5,000 families each year with employment, English language skills, financial literacy, emergency financial assistance, and other basic needs.

Teacher's Aide needed for Monday, Tues., Wed., Thur., and/or Fri, 9am to 3pm

We are looking for an individual to assist teachers in a group setting of a bunch of wonderful adults with Down syndrome.  Tuesday and Thursday are vocational days here at Friends of Down Syndrome so we exercise, work on projects, and lots of fun things.  M W F are academic and classroom aides are needed.
