 The Volunteer Services department at Baylor St Luke's Medical Center is searching for compassionate, caring, friendly and reliable volunteers to become Volunteer Patient Companions.

 The Volunteer Patient Companion (VPC) Program is about improving the care, health and wellbeing of patients. VPCs will provide one-on-one time with patients.  As a volunteer you may read, talk, play games, or just provide companionship to a patient.   VPCs will be a valuable resource to many families that are unable to take time off to be in the hospital with family members who are patients. The VPCs is a member of the health care team who works under the direct supervision of an RN.  The VPC may provide assistance in transporting and transferring patients

 This volunteer opportunity requires a minimum 4 hour commitment per week.  Volunteer shifts are available 7 days a week from 7am – 11am, 11am – 2pm, 2pm – 6pm, 6pm – 9pm.

This position works directly with nurses and patients on the floor. You will be assigned to a patient care unit and become a volunteer team member.  This is a great opportunity for people interested in the medical field.  There is a 100 hours minimum commitment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Visit all patients
• Use AIDIT with family members, guest, patients, and physicians.
• Ensure that all components of fall prevention protocol are in place; look for identifiers, bed exit alarms and that call light and personal items are within reach.
• Adjusts physical/environmental conditions for patient comfort.
• Remind patients to call for assistance
• Keep detailed notes on all patient concerns discussed during the visit
• Assists in meeting patient’s nutritional needs by checking food trays and assisting with feeding the patient (limitations apply), and providing fresh drinking water
• Report any urgent concerns immediately to the nurse.
• Must report any concerns or important information to the appropriate staff member(s)
• Call for assistance if rounding and patient needs toileting. Remain with patient until assistance arrives.
