Sheldon Lake State Park and Environmental Learning Center

Sheldon Lake State Park was established in 1984 and is the closest state park to the city of Houston. Admission and public programs are free to the public.The mission of the park is to inspire current and future generations to manage and conserve natural resources by safely providing environmental learning and outdoor recreational opportunities that will promote lifelong stewardship while preserving Sheldon Lake State Park and Environmental Learning Center.

Sheldon Lake State Park and Environmental Learning Center provides the city of Houston access to nature, while also being the home for hundreds of different plant and animal species. School and public groups come to learn about the environment through fun activities like hiking, fishing, or birding. Sheldon Lake State Park hosts several programs and events throughout the year, such as Halloween or planting events, to engage with the community and provide a unique way to experience the park. Park staff and volunteers work tirelessly to keep the park suitable for native wildlife and humans through habitat restoration, trail maintenance, and animal surveys.
