Who We Are

NAKASEC Texas is a grassroots community organization based in Houston, Texas, dedicated to organizing Korean and Asian Americans to achieve social, racial, and economic justice. We are the Texas chapter of the National Korean American Service & Education Consortium (NAKASEC), a national network founded in 1994 to project a progressive voice and promote the full participation of Korean and Asian Americans in the broader movement for social change. Our roots run deep in the Houston community. We began through the Korean American Voters League of Houston, where we focused on empowering Korean Americans in the Houston and Harris County regions to engage with the political systems that shape their lives. As we built coalitions with neighboring communities, we recognized the need for an organization that could organize more broadly across communities, cultures, and causes to push for systemic change.

What We Do

We organize, advocate, and build power with Korean and Asian American communities in Houston and across Harris County — centering the voices of those who are most marginalized, including low-income families, immigrants, seniors, undocumented community members, and limited English proficient residents.

1. Community Organizing & Civic Engagement We mobilize Korean and Asian American community members to participate fully in the civic and political life of their communities. From voter registration drives to candidate forums and policy advocacy, we work to ensure our community’s voice is heard at every level of government. We conduct ongoing surveys and listening sessions to understand what issues matter most to our neighbors, and we translate that knowledge into action.

2. Immigrant Rights & Legal Services We fight for the rights and dignity of all immigrants. We provide Know Your Rights trainings, connect community members to immigration legal services and DACA resources, and advocate for policies that protect immigrant families from deportation and detention. We support undocumented community members in navigating systems — from higher education access to ITIN filing — so they can live and thrive with greater security.

3. Language Access & Direct Services We offer culturally competent, multilingual services to community members who need support navigating complex systems. We work to break down language barriers that prevent Korean and Asian Americans — especially seniors and recent immigrants — from accessing the resources, services, and opportunities they deserve.

4. Policy Advocacy & Coalition Building We don’t just serve the community — we fight for systemic change alongside it. We advocate at the state and local level for policies that expand language access, protect immigrant families, and advance racial and economic equity. We build coalitions with allied organizations across communities, recognizing that our communities must work together in solidarity and collaboration to successfully challenge and change existing socioeconomic and political structures.

5. National Campaigns As part of the broader NAKASEC network, we participate in national campaigns including #Citizenship4All, which fights for a pathway to citizenship for all undocumented immigrants; Adoptees for Justice, which advocates for citizenship rights for intercountry adoptees; and
