Who We Are

Discover the restless genius of Vincent van Gogh through more than 50 of the iconic artist’s masterworks—on view exclusively in Houston. Vincent van Gogh: His Life in Art comes to the MFAH thanks to our collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum and the Kröller-Müller Museum which, together, hold the largest collections in the world of Van Gogh’s work.

This summer, Choreographic Objects transforms the Museum into a series of performance spaces welcoming visitors of all ages. Blurring the lines between sculpture, video, installation, and participation, the art of internationally acclaimed choreographer William Forsythe invites us to explore movement in new ways.

Works from the MFAH collections fill the galleries year-round with art embracing every era of history across the globe. Between Play and Grief features selections from the collection of Latin American and Latinx art spanning six decades of artistic expression. Among the focused exhibitions on view are Fear and Wonder: Sublime Landscapes on Paper and Mending: Craft and Community.

In the Beck Building, we present Spanish Colonial Paintings from the celebrated collection of Carl and Marilynn Thoma. Masterworks of art from the Islamic worlds are on long-term display in the Law Building through our partnership with Kuwait’s renowned al-Sabah Collection. To complement that installation, two dedicated galleries showcase objects from the Museum’s own growing Art of the Islamic Worlds collection.

When you plan your visits, take advantage of the ever-changing calendar of events brimming with activities for all ages throughout the Museum, including the Glassell School of Art and our two house museums: Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens and Rienzi.

We offer a number of ways to enjoy the Museum for free. For example, the Lunch + Look program provides free same-day general admission on weekdays from noon to 2 p.m. with your receipt from the MFA Café or the day’s food truck. Museum members receive free general admission every day, and Family-level memberships include the children in the household. Children 12 and younger are always admitted free, and on weekends all children receive free general admission when they show their card from any Texas public library. General admission is free for everyone on Thursdays, courtesy of Shell Oil Company.
