The Dickinson Music Enrichment Center

The Dickinson Music Enrichment Center provides free afterschool music lessons for underserved kids in our community. My passion for this mission stems from and accident that happened a couple of years. A 17-year-old young lady who was a section leader of the local High school marching band, was killed by a hit and run driver. The street is a typical underserved area that has been left behind with no sidewalks or streetlights. I did not know her personally, but my son is also in the band, and I witnessed firsthand the joy she obtained from being in the band. As a way of honoring her and her joy of music TDMEC was founded. TDMEC is the only organization or institution in the state of Texas that offers free afterschool music lessons in underserved communities. We offer these lessons to kids starting at 9 years old, there are less than 5 students per class, and we can offer part time employment to High School Juniors and Seniors that are band section leaders as music coaches for the beginner kids in our program. Thus, we are preparing music educators for the future. We truly believe that investing in two different generations of young people will lead to the ultimate success of our community.
