Who We Are
At the Social Justice Learning Institute, we are dedicated to improving the education, health, and well-being of youth and communities of color by empowering them to enact social change through research, training, and community mobilization. We envision communities where education empowers individuals to use their agency for the purpose of improving each other's lives.
What We Do
SJLI has been collaborating with the Houston Health Department (HHD) and My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) Houston to implement the Urban Scholars program in Houston since 2018. Our programs bring together youth development, community health, and systems change. We do this through our youth and community programming embedded in schools. Our Urban Scholars program operates within five schools in the Houston Independent School District and 21 sites throughout California. We have trained community members as peer educators and created agency among thousands of students and residents, resulting in improved health outcomes and educational opportunities.
