Who We Are

In 1981, several members of the Brazos County District Attorney’s Office began to discuss the need for services for survivors of sexual assault. From these conversations, three individuals, Justice of the Peace Carolyn Hensarling, District Attorney Travis B. Bryan, III, and Assistant District Attorney Carolyn Ruffino, founded the Brazos County Rape Crisis Center, Inc., a non-profit, private corporation. At its annual meeting in 1982, the Board of Directors were appointed and the Center adopted its by-laws and established policies and procedures for the operation of the organization. In 1982, the Center began to train volunteers and officially opened in October of 1983. In 2007 we changed our name to the Sexual Assault Resource Center due to us serving the entire Brazos Valley including Burleson, Grimes, Washington, Leon, Madison, Robertson, and Brazos counties.

Since that time, the Center has trained over 1,000 volunteers, established strong community partnerships, conducted training and educational workshops, and assisted survivors with crisis intervention services. We offer both individual and group counseling services, case management, education and outreach, crisis intervention, and advocacy through our 24-hour crisis hotline and 24-hour accompaniment services to hospitals, law enforcement agencies, and court proceedings.

Volunteers are the backbone of this agency and we could not do it without their support. As a result, we depend on incredible people from the community to support our work and warriors for the cause to end sexual violence. Together, we can work to provide support and services to the Brazos Valley.

What We Do

The Sexual Assault Resource Center's mission is to end the cycle of sexual violence in the Brazos Valley, TX through education, empowerment, and advocacy.

We offer both individual and group counseling services, case management, education and outreach, crisis intervention, and advocacy through our 24-hour crisis hotline and 24-hour accompaniment services to hospitals, law enforcement agencies, and court proceedings.
