Volunteer: Love cats and dogs? Consider volunteering at Houston's only LEED-certified no-kill animal shelter!

Volunteer Opportunities

Want to make a difference in the lives of Houston's homeless animals? Become a Friends For Life Volunteer, and work in Houston’s on No-Kill Animal Shelter! We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities, and all of them make a true difference to the animals in our care, and in our community. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and attend volunteer orientation and training. Community Service hours cannot be completed through the Friends For Life Volunteer Program (school service hours are permitted.)

If interested, please visit http://www.adoptfriends4life.org/how-to-help/volunteer to start an application.

Animal Care Volunteers

Provide direct care to animals by maintaining their living environment, providing socialization and enrichment, and providing day to day care for the dogs and cats in our program.

Adoption Counselors

Screen applicants for placement of animals into adoptive homes. Volunteers must attend additional training beyond the initial orientation and training. Volunteers must complete at least 20 hours in an animal care area prior to becoming a trained volunteer adoption counselor.

Behavior Volunteers

Get trained for our Behavior Team! You will have the opportunity to work directly with animal behaviorists to help rehabilitate and train the animals in our care. When you reach higher levels within the behavioral team, you have the opportunity to help with intakes and pull animals from other high-kill facilities.

Fix Houston

Help reduce Houston’s free living cat population by working with Fix Houston, Friends For Life’s own TNR Program. Working with Fix Houston includes education the public about spay and neuter, trapping and releasing free living cats, or working large community events to help families get free spay and neuters for their pets.

Mobile Adoption Event Volunteers

Work at our off-site mobile adoption locations and assist in setting up the mobile adoption area, caring for and handling the animals, and speaking to the public about Friends For Life's mission and programs. This opportunity requires a high level of physical activity. Volunteers must complete at least 12 hours in an animal care area to work at adoption events.

Reception

Help by being the friendly, welcoming, face of our organization. Receptionists at FFL help greet and educate the public, connect the community with vital resources, and help complete important administrative tasks to keep the shelter running.

Volunteer: Adoption Champion Volunteer

The Way Home is an agency that focuses exclusively on identifying and supporting permanent/adoptive families for teenagers in living in foster care.  Our children are between the ages of 11-17, most have been in living in foster care for many years and all are at-risk for aging out of the system when they turn 18.   We take on a small number of kids at time and work through their past and current relationships, and then out into the community to find a home that meets each child's needs.

Our program provides each child with a volunteer Adoption Champion.  The Champion is part mentor and part adoption recruiter.  The Champion's job is to form a relationship with the child, get to know his/her strengths, hopes, challenges, and to help us identify important people to the child.    As we identify a home, the input of the Adoption Champion is really important to us and is helpful for the potential caregiver as oftentimes the Champion knows the most about what will make a successful match. Our Adoption Champions make a one year commitment and make at least two contacts per month with the child(ren) they are working with.   If you are interested in becoming an Adoption Champion, the next step is to attend our volunteer training. Our next training is Saturday, July 15.
