Breakthrough Houston at Connect Community provides students from the Gulfton and Sharpstown communities with extra learning opportunities in the summer to prepare them for rigorous high schools and colleges. These students are college-bound, curious learners. As an effort to see our students to and through college, we would like to expose them to the many different aspects of college as well as future career opportunities after college.
To do this, our rising 8th graders have a “career day,” where groups of students visit with professionals around the city of Houston. We are hoping to partner with your or your organization to give them an insight into what your career – their possible future career – is like.
- When: July 14th from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm (total time is somewhat flexible)
- Who: 5-6 rising 8th graders from KIPP:Connect, KIPP:Sharpstown and YES Prep in Southwest Houston
- What: Exposure to what a typical day at your office is like, why you chose to enter into your career, and how college is important in entering that career. Hands-on activities are especially great and/or the opportunity to speak with people doing different things within your office, especially minorities and/or bilingual staff.
We know that giving them this type of exposure will build their excitement for their futures and push them to achieve their highest potential. We are looking for partners who are excited at the opportunity of talking about their work in a way that is engaging to middle school students and helps them open their minds to future possibilities. I hope that you will consider participating with us.
Please let us know if you and your company would be interested in hosting no later than 7/1/16.
