Sort Room Volunteers

The volunteer work primarily consists of sorting donated medical supplies in preparation for shipment to those in needs in developing countries.

Supplies are sorted by type (form, fit, function) and quantity to ensure they meet requisite expiration dates. Staff members are on hand to assist in identifying products and answering questions.

Volunteer days for the sort room are:

Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays Morning Session 1:  9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Afternoon Session 2:  1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Fridays  Morning Session: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m Saturdays:  Morning Session 1:  9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

**PLEASE NOTE: Our greatest need for volunteers is during Tuesday through Friday each week. Saturdays are very popular and fill up weeks and months in advance. Thank you!

Volunteers between the ages of 15-18 must be accompanied by an adult. In student groups, one adult per every three minors is required.

Volunteer: HCHSA Sports Internship Program

The Harris County - Houston Sports Authority (HCHSA) offers a variety of sports internship opportunities throughout the year. Volunteer: Opossum and Pals Program

Volunteers work under the guidance of a permitted wildlife rehabilitator and are trained how to feed and care for baby opossums. Duties include feeding opossums, cleaning cages, washing dishes, weighing opossums, room maintenance, and food preparation.

Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age to care for opossums. Volunteers attend a 1 hour Orientation and pay a $25 registration fee to participate.

Once trained, volunteers can sign up to work shifts under the guidance of an Opossum Supervisor. Shifts run from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm, 12:30 pm to 4:00 pm, 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm 7 days a week.

Volunteer: Wildlife Center Volunteer

Center Volunteers work up-close with nature in this busy emergency wildlife center where thousands of ill, injured and abandoned wildlife are admitted. Help is needed to assist the public with admissions, answer the telephone, care for the education animals (owl, snakes, opossum, squirrels, and turtles), and household chores. This is a great learning opportunity that helps save and protect our natural resources. Other opportunities available: Education Team, data entry, or get more involved with committee work like fundraising, finance, or special events to mention a few.

Volunteer: Court Mandated Volunteering at the Houston Food Bank

Individuals who receive a court order to perform community service, or who must perform community service to qualify for WorkSource or Houston Housing, may complete their hours at the Houston Food Bank.

The Houston Food Bank's Blue Badge Volunteer Program is an alternative which helps individuals complete their required community service hours in a friendly, safe, climate controlled, and structured environment. Volunteer shifts are available Monday through Saturday, morning, afternoon, evening and some late evening.

Conduct preliminary research on potential funders – foundations, corporate and individual donors.
